Ahmedabad-based designer duo, Shyamal and Bhumika, consistently prove that there are plenty of ways to innovate traditional occasionwear. If you are looking for some wedding fashion inspiration, the designers’ latest couture collection, Muse of Mirrors, from India Couture Week 2018 at Taj Palace, New Delhi on Saturday, offered fresh takes aplenty.
The designers demonstrated how creating a breathtaking bridal moment doesn’t necessarily equate to overzealous embellishments. They gave traditional silhouette a modern makeover with their showstopper Kiara Advani’s seafoam green lehenga. In true wedding fashion, Kiara’s lehenga featured blooming floral details via elaborate and intricate laser cut and pearl embroidery and an off-the-moment train that conjured a whimsical and flirty feeling. The designers paired the lehenga with an unabashedly feminine choli dripping in sparkles, which featured ultra-feminine, eye-catching sheer ruched sleeves. Kiara’s bridal-worthy look was accessorised with a gold and kundan choker from RK Jewellers.
Shyamal and Bhumika’s ICW 2018 collection, presented by Hindustan Times and Sunil Sethi Design Alliance, was the breath of fresh air we needed. The designer’s wedding-ready collection didn’t just offer lavish tulle and trains and shimmer, they showed options for all styles and occasions/ ceremonies for both women and men. The designers showcased lehengas, anarkalis, sarees and sherwanis in natural, diaphanous fabrics that were both bold and classic, laden with ancient embroidery techniques, such as zardozi pita, floral appliqués and colourful details.
Shyamal and Bhumika took a soft and clean approach with regal lace confections paired with rich and opulent embroideries and modern form-fitting silhouettes adorned in crystal beadwork, fit for a bride (or groom). Voluminous skirts have long been a staple in the bridal fashion world. However, this traditional silhouette received a modern makeover from the designers as their collection featured asymmetrical tiered tulle skirts with a touch of shimmer.
And don’t forget the statement sleeves, which became the focal point of many of the ensembles in Shyamal and Bhumika’s latest collection. Futuristic sheer-embroidered balloon sleeves that fell beyond the fingertips were truly a departure from the bridal norm.
