So Sam Smith is starring in the new campaign for Balenciaga’s autumn/winter 2015 menswear collection. A pop star fronting a campaign isn’t exactly groundbreaking – Rihanna, Cher, Pharrell and Lady Gaga have all been at it recently – and Smith has already expressed an interest in fashion after being spotted backstage at the Burberry show back in February.
But this is different. With a focus on creative director Alexander Wang’s edgy tailoring, the pairing is being referred to as a “creative collaboration”, and the campaign (which will also feature a video) includes suits, quiffs and borderline dressed-like-a-vicar.
The images have Smith in a serious of dramatic poses too – something more natural to a performer, rather than the teenage model who is more typically the subject of advertising campaigns. The bunker-style set, and the table with massive piece of quartz, are perhaps less easily explained. Just put them down to Fashion.
